W&M WIND ENSEMBLE SILENT FILM SHOWCASE

Silent Film Collage

Led by Richard Marcus of W&M’s Music Department, the W&M Wind Ensemble will perform live orchestration for three silent short films: THE ADVENTURER (1917) and THE IMMIGRANT (1917) starring Charlie Chaplin, and COPS (1922) starring Buster Keaton.

 

THE ADVENTURER
1917, USA, 31 min, Director: Charlie Chaplin
Chaplin plays an escaped convict on the run from prison guards. He falls into favor with a wealthy family after he saves a young lady from drowning, but her suitor does everything he can to have Chaplin apprehended by the police. Starring: Charlie Chaplin, Edna Purviance, and Eric Campbell.

This film will be introduced by Sharon Zuber, Professor of Film & Media Studies/English.

 

THE IMMIGRANT
1917, USA, 30 min, Director: Charlie Chaplin
Chaplin plays an immigrant who endures a challenging voyage and gets into trouble as soon as he arrives in America. Starring Charlie Chaplin, Edna Purviance, and Eric Campbell.

This film will be introduced by Sasha Prokhorov, Professor of Russian and Post-Soviet Studies/Film & Media Studies.

 

COPS
1922, USA, 18 min, Director: Buster Keaton & Edward F. Cline
A series of mishaps results in a young man getting chased by a city’s entire police force. Starring: Buster Keaton, Edward F. Cline, and Virginia Fox.

This film will be introduced by Arthur Knight, Associate Professor of English and American Studies/Film & Media Studies.
