Global Film Festival: 24 SPEED Filmmaking Competition

Official Rules – 2013

 

The Goal:  Write, shoot, and edit a short film in 24 hours.

Project Description: Teams of filmmakers compete in a time-limited filmmaking contest.  Applications are for complete teams only, ranging in size from one to five students.

The Rules:

  1. The project kick-off will be Saturday, February 9, 2013, in the Swem Library Ford Classroom from 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM. What to expect at kick-off:  Teams will be assigned a predetermined prop and line of dialogue along with a randomly-drawn genre (each team will choose two and must select one immediately).  These elements must be incorporated into the team’s final video submission. The contest will officially begin at 7:30 PM.
  2. Each team’s final product must be finished and successfully delivered/transferred to the Media Center. Acceptable formats include a copy of your work on a DVD-Video; a high-resolution QuickTime file (for example, Apple ProRes; or similar file that can be opened via QuickTime. This must be delivered to a contest official by Sunday, February 10 at 7:30 PM.  The submission is only considered complete when all elements – completed movie (delivered on a DVD), movie information sheet, team roster/credits, all release forms (see rule #10) – are delivered.  Only projects that meet the deadline will be considered for awards.  If you are not using the Media Center Studio Computers you must hand deliver the final movie in an acceptable format.
  3. The public screening will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 14, in theKimball Theatre in Merchants Square.  All films eligible for screening will be shown to a public audience.  New to this year, all awards, the Jury Prize and Audience Award will be announced on Sunday, February 17 during the Global Film Festival Closing reception. This will be from 5:30-7 PM in the Andrews Hall Studio.
  4. Only projects that meet the deadline and were created following all guidelines here (including delivery of paperwork and overall project length) will be eligible for screening and prizes.  Late entries (see rule below) may still be considered for screening and the Audience Award but will not be eligible for the judge’s prizes.
  5. Each production team will have one to five registered members.  These should be the names of the participants who will represent the film in the screening program, on the Internet, and in any press coverage.  Groups are encouraged to use a cast and crew of any size and to credit accordingly in their shorts, but please note that only one to five people will be the official team members.  One of the members will be designated Team Leader.
  6. REGISTRATION Due Date:  To enter a team in the contest, a group representative must fill out the appropriate 24 Speed Application Form ONLINE. Note: there is a $10 registration fee. This fee can be dropped off at Swem Media Center during operational hours. Please no later than Saturday February 9, by 5:00pm.  Entry and use of equipment will be given on a first-come, first-registered basis.  All teams will be notified that their registration has been accepted.
  7. Teams may request supplies including one digital camcorder, a tripod, and a Mac editing station with a variety of applications including Final Cut Pro.  These teams will be responsible for the upkeep of the equipment, and are expected to return it in the condition in which it was originally provided.  Teams may be required to sign an agreement taking responsibility for equipment damage caused by negligence.  Rental equipment is limited and will be available on a first-registered, first-served basis.  Students may use their own equipment.
  8. The films must be 2-4 minutes in length including credits.
  9. All material (including sounds, animations, script writing or special effects) is to be generated within the 24-hour project time period.  This means no stock/found footage created outside of that time period is to be used.  No exceptions.  Music composed outside of the 24-hour window may be utilized provided proper consent is acquired (see rule #11).
  10. Each production team is responsible for securing and submitting talent and location release forms for every member of their cast and for all locations and music/sound used.  These forms will be provided on the event web site.  The production crew must have the rights to any music used, or use music that is in the public domain.
  11. The content of the film is left to the discretion of the participating groups.  The organizers reserve the right to edit or not to screen any film that they deem inappropriate for the event.
  12. Teams agree to not post videos to YouTube, Facebook, or any other public channel until after the public screening on Feburary 17 or they forfeit eligibility for the Judges’ Award and all special awards.
